Primary Purpose: 

Under general supervision, provides Braille instruction and produces Braille materials to facilitate a mainstreaming setting for blind students. Employee is responsible for transcribing materials into Braille. Employee coordinates services and works with teachers to appropriately modify classroom activities for the visually impaired student. 

 

Education / Certification: 

  1. High School Diploma or GED. 
  2. Paraprofessional Certification as required by the State Board and the District.

Special Knowledge / Skills: 

  1. Ability to work with children with disabilities.  
  2. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.  
  3. Ability to communicate effectively. 
  4. Knowledge of general office equipment.  
  5. Ability to type 70 words per minute. 
  6. Ability to operate a variety of computerized equipment. 
  7. Skill in formatting transcribed materials. 
  8. Ability to train students on equipment. 
  9. Ability and willingness to learn new technological skills. 

Experience / Other Requirements: 

  1. Some experience working with children. 

Major Responsibilities and Duties: 

  1. Transcribe materials on a computer in Braille. 
  2. Maintain necessary contacts with equipment vendors. 
  3. Monitor students on computerized equipment. 
  4. Prepare media materials. 
  5. Prepare instructional materials for visually impaired students and staff. 
  6. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment. 
  7. Maintain confidentiality. 
  8. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.  
  9. Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records. 
  10. Other duties as assigned.

None.

Brailing equipment, personal computer, copier, and audiovisual equipment as necessary.
