Description

Primary Purpose:
Under limited supervision, ensure the proper operation and maintenance of wastewater (biological) treatment systems and facilities based on current regulations. Responsible for performing adequate process control of wastewater treatment and collection facilities in accordance with permits issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

 

Education / Certification:

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Four years experience in a Wastewater Utility.
  3. Wastewater Technician Class C license.
  4. Valid Texas driver’s license with demonstrated safe driving record.

Special Knowledge / Skills:

  1. Must have the ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations: ability to speak and write English clearly. Must be able to assertively control conversations in order to quickly and accurately gather pertinent information and be able to communicate this information professionally and precisely to the proper recipient. Must have the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Must be able to read and understand laboratory tests conducted in a wastewater treatment facility.
  2. Must be consistent in dealing with people; must be sensitive to others problems and concerns without direct involvement, must exclude personal biases from work performance; must have the ability to accept criticism and/or discipline; must have tact and diplomacy; must strive to promote a cooperative atmosphere in the department; must have a positive attitude. Must be able to maintain cooperative working relationships with employees, various organizations and the public. Must have the ability to work safely.
  3. Must have experience in a wastewater utility. Must have skill in the operation of a variety of lab equipment, generators, pumps, gauges, and other common tools. Must have the ability to perform control calculations.
  4. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material.
  5. Must have the ability to operate computer equipment up to long periods of time. Must be able to use a shovel, common hand and power tools, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, calculator and a variety of lab equipment.


Experience / Other Requirements

  1. Four years of experience working with Wastewater operations is preferred.
  2. Personal cell phone is required to handle district related business, including after hours, or when away from the office on district business.


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Collects and delivers samples to applicable laboratories and/or other governmental entities.
  2. Operates, maintains, and repairs malfunctions at the wastewater treatment plant; repairs gauges, pumps, filters and other controls and equipment.
  3. Operates and maintains sewage pump stations.
  4. Maintains, operates, repairs and replaces equipment as necessary.
  5. Logs, maintains, and files all reports with governmental entities and/or regulators.
  6. Routinely conducts site inspections ensuring proper operation of all systems and components.
  7. Assembles, installs, and maintains pipes, fittings, and fixtures of wastewater systems according to specifications and codes.
  8. Determines sources of malfunctions and complete repairs as indicated or according to work orders.
  9. Receives and completes work orders.
  10. Selects material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
  11. Maintains accurate records on material and labor used.
  12. Maintains inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
  13. Inspects systems and ensure areas are clean.
  14. Detects needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment following established inspection procedures.
  15. Assists construction personnel as needed.
  16. Responds to emergency calls as needed.
  17. Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  18. Operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  19. Ensures that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  20. Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
  21. Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  22. Reviews and assesses all aspects of CISD’s wastewater treatment facilities to suggest/recommend methods for improving efficiency and oversight such as 1) hiring wastewater-specific positions, 2) staff training/licensing, 3) internal duty assignment protocols/procedures, and 4) third-party service/maintenance contracts.
  23. Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
  24. Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
